How to Measure a Room Without Going Back to Site

Mar 17, 2026

You're back at the office. The client just asked for the ceiling height in the kitchen. Or your supplier needs the exact width of the doorway before they can quote. Or you realised you never measured the alcove.

If you haven't scanned the room, you're getting back in the truck. If you have, you're opening Manifold on your phone and pulling the measurement in about 30 seconds.

Here's how it works.

The problem: forgotten measurements are expensive

Every contractor has driven back to a job site for a single measurement. It's one of the most common and most avoidable time wasters in the trade. You're not the only one — it's so common there's a whole category of software trying to solve it.

The real solution isn't to be more careful with your tape measure. It's to capture the room once in a way that lets you pull any measurement you need later, without returning.

How Manifold's remote measurement works

Manifold uses the LiDAR sensor in your iPhone Pro (iPhone 12 Pro or newer) to capture a precise 3D model of a room in about 60 seconds. Once that scan is uploaded and processed — processing time varies depending on server load — every dimension in that room is queryable from anywhere.

Open the scan, tap the measurement tool, and tap any two points on the 3D model. Manifold calculates the distance. Accurate to half an inch on most flat surfaces.

You can measure:

  • Wall-to-wall distances (room dimensions)
  • Floor-to-ceiling height
  • Window and door rough opening widths and heights
  • The distance between any two points in the room
  • Room perimeter from the auto-generated floor plan

The video-to-measurement workflow

There's an even faster version of this for contractors who are already on site: just take a video.

Open Manifold, tap Orbit Measure, and walk the room while recording. The app uses your phone's LiDAR sensor as you move through the space. Upload when you have signal. Once processed, you have a 3D model and floor plan with all dimensions.

The whole capture process takes less time than writing measurements on a clipboard. And unlike a clipboard, the 3D model lets you pull any measurement you forgot — not just the ones you thought to write down.

Who this is actually for

Remote measurement isn't just for the measurement you forgot. It's valuable in a lot of common contractor scenarios:

  • Pre-quote surveys. Scan during the estimate. Pull any measurement you need later when you're pricing the job, without a second site visit.
  • Material ordering. Verify a dimension before placing an order. Open the scan, check the measurement, confirm the order. No truck needed.
  • Client questions. A client asks a specific question about their space. You answer it from your phone in 30 seconds instead of scheduling a return visit.
  • Subcontractor coordination. Share the 3D model with a sub who needs to take their own measurements before quoting. They measure from their office.
  • Engineer or architect requests. Your structural engineer needs a specific dimension. Send them the scan link. They measure it themselves, remotely.

Accuracy: what to expect

Manifold's LiDAR scans are accurate to approximately half an inch on most interior flat surfaces. This is more than sufficient for renovation planning, material ordering, and client documentation.

It's not a replacement for survey-grade measurements required for structural engineering, legal boundary surveys, or tight-tolerance manufacturing. But for 95% of contractor field measurement needs, it's accurate enough — and infinitely faster than driving back to site.

Getting started

You need an iPhone 12 Pro or newer and a Manifold Photo+Scan subscription ($24/user/month). Scan the room once. Every measurement lives in the scan forever.
