Plumbing Inspection Checklist for Contractors (2026)

John Dutton

A plumbing inspection checklist does two things: it ensures nothing gets missed on the job, and it creates a documented record that protects you if anything is disputed later.

This checklist covers every stage from rough-in through final walkthrough.

Rough-in inspection checklist

Supply

  • All supply lines run per approved drawings
  • Pipe sizing correct throughout
  • All shut-offs installed and accessible
  • Isolation valves at every fixture
  • Pressure test completed — gauge reading photographed
  • All penetrations through fire-rated assemblies sealed

DWV

  • All drain lines run at correct grade (min 1/4" per foot)
  • All vent connections complete
  • Clean-outs installed at required intervals and locations
  • All DWV joints properly solvent-welded or leaded
  • Smoke test or water test completed

Rough-in dimensions

  • Toilet rough-in confirmed (typically 12" from wall)
  • Shower pan drain centred per plan
  • Sink rough-in heights correct
  • Tub/shower valve rough-in at specified height

Pre-cover documentation

Before any framing, drywall, or flooring covers the rough-in:

  • GPS-tagged photo of every valve location
  • Full photo walk of all pipe runs — supply and DWV
  • All clean-out positions documented with measurements
  • Inspection approval photographed

See our plumbing rough-in documentation guide for the full pre-cover workflow.

Final walkthrough checklist

Fixtures

  • All fixtures installed and secured
  • No leaks at any connection — check visually and under pressure
  • All shut-offs operational
  • Toilet secure, no movement
  • Shower and tub drains clear and properly sealed

Documentation at handover

  • All valve locations documented in PDF report to owner
  • Main shut-off location clearly indicated
  • Any non-standard installations explained in writing
  • Warranty information provided

Making this checklist digital

Paper checklists get wet, lost, and disputed. A digital checklist where each item requires a photo before it can be checked off creates an automatic documentation trail — without extra steps.

Manifold's required-photo checklists let you build this workflow once and use it on every job. Each item requires a photo. Every completion is timestamped. PDF exports automatically. See our plumbing contractor app guide.
